With the migration of our website to WordPress system, we are discovering and exploring new ways to enhance our website experience.

First on the line, we are introducing a new feature for our registered SIDA members to comment and submit articles.

What these mean are as followed…

• Any registered SIDA member who sign up for a free account from our website will have the privilege to submit articles and news that is relevant to the spirit of invention.
  We will grant the status of “Contributor” to any SIDA member upon verification and approval.
  But in order to make sure that article submitted are relevant, it will be subjected to moderation by website Administrator and Editors.
  “Contributor” will also be able to comment on any posting in the website.
• Any non-registered SIDA member who sign up for a free account will only attain the status of “Subscriber”.
  This would mean that “Subscriber” can only post comment on individual article. They will not be able to submit any article for posting.

At the talk Jim shared his views and key points to note in embarking on the path to inventing with the science students.  Jim shared that the first step is to begin with the end in mind. That is to adopt a mindset with determination to complete the journey that has great challenges and obstacles in its path.

The speaker also related that very often ideation is difficult and he suggested that what is called SCAMPER be used. SCAMPER is to substitute, combine, adapt, modify, put to another use, eliminate, reverse.

The talk is part of SIDA’s activity towards promoting invention and development of invention. SIDA hope to inspire students and those who are interested to make their first steps into the Inventor’s Journey.

We thank the staff of Millennia Institute for organizing the talk and our member Jim for contributing his service to the association.

Singapore Inventors’ Development Association (SIDA) organized the “Inventors Initiative” Plenary Sessions at the National Library @ 100 Victoria Street, Level 5, Imagination Room on 5 August 2006. Five members of the association and a guest shared their experiences and views with participants from various walks of life. The event was well attended with the Imagination Room filled with responsive participants.

The association is thankful to the following people for their interesting contributions:

* Mr. George Loo from SIDA who led the session with ‘INVENTING IN SINGAPORE’,
* Mr. Tan Yin Leong from SIDA who spoke on ‘IDEATION AND EVALUATION’,
* Mr. Ng Kim Tean from SIDA who spoke on ‘INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY ISSUES’,
* Mr. John Venning from SIDA who spoke on ‘PRACTICAL INVENTING’
* Mr. Jim Gan C.L. from SIDA who spoke on ‘MARKETING YOUR INVENTIONS’ and
* Mr. John Leong, a guest who spoke on ‘FROM CAREER TO HOBBY TO CAREER’.

The association had also organized the “We Can Invent! Innovation” Exhibition at the National Library @ 100 Victoria Street, Level 1 Plaza from 5 till 13 August 2006. Two members of the association and eight companies exhibited their inventions/products.

The two members who participated at the exhibition were Ms Michelle Chan and Mr. Cheng Ngak Suah. The companies that participated at the exhibitions were:

We are participating again this year at Global Entrepolis @ Singapore 2005 exhibition – The Enterprise Exchange which commence from Tuesday, 27 till Thursday, 29 September 2005 at Suntec Singapore International Convention and Exhibition Centre, 1 Raffles Boulevard. SIDA allocated booth is H25, Hall 403 & 404. The opening hours for the Enterprise Exchange for 27 and 28 September are 10.00 am till 7.30 pm an on 29 September is 10.00 am till 6.00 pm.

Enclosed is a location map of the exhibition hall showing the location of SIDA booth – H25 (9 sq. metres booth) for your reference.

The GES 2005 is designed to facilitate enterprises, both big and small, to network, interact and create business opportunities with some of the most successful and innovative companies. One of the several events at the exhibition is HOTDate where startups are matched with venture capitalists. For the more adventurous, they can take to the stage at HOTPitch to sell their ideas, products and innovations to some 200 potential companies and VCs.

In addition there is Business Matching Portal (BMP), an on-line customized web portal to seek out potential business partners and set up meetings even before the event. This together with the HOTEvents and evening networking sessions ensure effective networking among participants helping them to maximize their time in Singapore.

At SIDA booth (Booth No: H25, Hall 403 / 404) you will be able to see our members promoting SIDA and their inventions. Four of our supportive members will be exhibiting their innovations / inventions at SIDA’s booth. These members are paying participation fees to SIDA to help defray the booth rental expenses incurred for the exhibition. The members promoting their inventions are:

a) George Loo: Mobile Biometrics, a patent pending technology running on a real mobile phone which can recognise a person and reject others

b) H. D. Gupta: Telecomunications devices

c) John Venning: SkySpyder for safe remote cleaning of tall buildings
